When it comes to building your website, there are more choices than ever if you want to try to save a few bucks and tackle it yourself. It seems like every five minutes I hear an ad about building your own beautiful, professional site. I’ve used some of these products to varying degrees of success. There’s a couple things that I notice right away when I sit down to any website builder. I notice that I spend almost no time planning my overall site before I start building. I’ve found myself three pages in thinking to myself, “Wait, who is this aimed at? What is the goal? What are the main messages I want to communicate?” The second thing I notice is how much I use tools like Photoshop and Illustrator still to accomplish the look and feel that I want from the images on my site. If I didn’t have these tools, would I really have a beautiful, professional looking website? I’m not sure.
I’m not down on using no-code tools to build websites, I use WordPress more times than not to build sites. If you’re judicious about the themes and plugins you use, it’s a solid solution to build an affordable website. But the thing is, I still use all my designer-y tools and a bit of code to get it to look the way I want. I often run into small business owners who are disappointed in THEMSELVES when their DIY website doesn’t look as slick as they’d hoped. Or they finished their site but it looks terrible on phones or isn’t ranking at all on Google. Stop being so hard on yourself! This isn’t your full-time job! It’s not as easy as it’s made out to be. If you need help, or have a half-finished DIY site hiding on your computer, give us a shout and we’ll help you get it over the finish line.
